HAPPY WALBURGAS. This year’s Walburgas card was inspired by the Betsey Trotwood, venue for the show, and the Fleet River which I thought ran beneath it.
Buried water has always fascinated me. The buried Fleet runs to the Thames. Apparently the site of the Betsey was on a bank that once had watermills, and the river was almost unbelievably foul. 250 years ago Alexander Pope wrote:
To where Fleet-Ditch with disemboguing steams
Rolls the large tribute of dead dogs to Thames
The photo is from a poor mobile, done up, with the packhorse carrying an oil drum from the 08 Walbugas card and the wheat was grown from last year’s
From the first Walburgas collection:
In the early 90’s Glyn Watkins forgot Valentines Day. Rather than send a late card he got a Saints book and picked Walburga to be the Patron Saint of forgetfulness and late cards, and drew a card with a poem. It made no difference, but he has done a Walburgas for most year’s since. Walbuga turned out to be an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who helped convert the german tribes, become one of the most influential women in Dark Age Europe, and gave her name to Walpurgisnacht..
I am planning a repeat of two of my creations: the Little Britton Festival (celebrating Thomas Britton – the musical coalman of Clerkenwell Green) and an international Hat Throwing Championship in London in the summer.

bradwan blog .

INTRODUCTION

This blog is acting as a show page for my annual Walburgas Day Show (25th Feb.). There is a contact form at the bottom of the post for you to ask about the show and tickets. There is no buy button and yet, and I may not manage one.

WHAT’S WALBURGAS

Walburgas Day. In the early 90’s Glyn Watkins
forgot Valentines Day. Rather than send a late
card he got a Saints book and picked Walburga
to be the Patron Saint of forgetfulness and late
cards, and drew a card with a poem. It made
no difference, but he has been doing Walburgas
ever since. St. Walburga turned out to be an
Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who helped convert
the germanic tribes, became one of the most
important women in Dark Age Europe, and
gave her name to Walpurgisnacht.

The above is from the introduction of:
Walburgas forgetting – forgiving Poems and pictures by Glyn Watkins.

2012 will be the 19th year Glyn has done a card,
and the 7th year he has done a show.

THIS YEAR’S SHOW

The 7th annual stand-up celebration of the saint of forgotten Valentine’s, inc. the joys of Clerkenwell!
Glyn Watkins’
WALBURGAS SHOW
Poems – Songs – Pictures – Stories

I never thought that a poetry show could be so action-packed and so funny. A very enjoyable
evening.
Laura Reilly, South Milford
